Social Media – Twitter Tips

by Scott Henderson on March 5, 2010

A great tool available today to Internet Marketers is Twitter, it helps them to zero in on their target audience.  If done correctly it can provide them with an abundance of leads.  The key is doing it correctly, not spamming people every 10 minutes.

Here are some useful tips for using Twitter effectively and correctly to maximize your marketing efforts.

  • First and perhaps most important of all is to make your Twitter account standout. Use your real name for the account name, use a picture of yourself, and use a custom background. These show that you care about your business and will add a level of confidence in your Followers.
  • Perform daily maintenance on your Twitter account. More on this below, but you want to make sure that you are sending out at least 3-5 Tweets per day, adding more Follows and Followers, and responding to any Tweets directed to your @username.
  • When it comes to sending out Tweets, do not send out sales pitches all the time, mix it up. Find some good quotes and Tweet them in between. If you find a good article, send a Tweet linking to the URL, (see below for url shortening). You have 140 characters to use per Tweet, so use them wisely.
  • Seek out your target audience with services such as Twellow. This tool acts like a yellow pages for Twitter. If you are seeking Real Estate Agents, then enter that into the search function and voila, you will have a listing of Twitter users who have identified themselves as Real Estate Agents in their profiles.
  • When you find your target audience you want to Follow them. Chances are they will Follow you back, and that is the goal here.
  • Daily you want to look at your Follows and see which ones are NOT Following you back and Un-Follow them. Twellow has a feature that makes this easy. The reason you want to perform this is that if there is a difference of greater than 10% Follows to Followers, you will not be able to add anymore. So try to keep the two numbers close to the same.
  • Daily try to seek out and add 200 – 300 new Follows that meet your target. The next day check and Un-Follow as indicated above.
  • When sending url links use a service such as Bit.ly. This service will shorten the url to very few characters, saving you those 140 that you have available per Tweet.
  • Use the services of SocialOomph to automate many Twitter tasks. You can do schedule automated Tweets at specified times, mass delete direct messages, and many more features.

Twitter is a very powerful tool if used correctly, do your part to Tweet useful and informative items.
